RECENT HAPPENINGS AT THE FOOD BANK

Local Kroger stores will now be donating protein food products with very high nutritional value to the Southeast Texas Food Bank.  Various kinds of meat that were once discarded to make room for fresher product will be picked up by the Food Bank, frozen, and immediately distributed to low-income people, ensuring that the food is used while it is wholesome.  Many low-income people struggle to put food with high-nutritional value on the table.  Our partnership with Kroger will help us ensure our children, the elderly, and families facing a financial crisis have a place to turn for food assistance.

Dine out and Donate During the 2009

GoTexan Restaurant Round-Up!

The Texas Department of Agriculture's GO TEXAN program invites you to dine-out at participating GO TEXAN restaurants to enjoy locally grown or raised products and Texas wines during the 2009 GO TEXAN Restaurant Round-Up Sept. 28 - Oct. 2. During this special week, restaurants will support local farmers by highlighting Texas products on their menus.

Many of the restaurants have pledged to donate a portion of the day's proceeds to our local Texas food bank. Get involved today by going to http://www.gotexanrestaurantroundup.com/ to find a GO TEXAN restaurant near you and sign up to win Texas-sized giveaways.

Agency Education Classes at the Food Bank

We had a great turnout for the first Food Handlers Certification class at the Food Bank.
Paula Thacker, Orange County Extension Agent, has partnered with us to offer on-site training for our agencies on a regular basis. The Food Handlers class is not only informative, but also offers a chance for our agency representatives to network with their peers.

Shopping for highly nutritious products at the Food Bank

Our agencies now have access to highly valued items such as eggs, milk, yogurt, and bread through our new retail store pickup program.  These food products have been donated by local retailers Wal-Mart, Sam's, Kroger, and H.E.B. to help provide more nutritious food to low-income people.
